23 Feb Meriden Approves Business Personal Property Audit Program
MERIDEN, Conn. — February 21, 2026 | Council authorizes partnership for personal property audit services
The City of Meriden, Connecticut, has unanimously approved an agreement with Tax Management Associates (TMA) to assist with auditing business personal property accounts.
The engagement, authorized by the City Council, will support the Assessor’s Office in reviewing personal property declarations filed by local businesses. The program will focus on verifying that taxable assets — including machinery, equipment, computers, furniture, and other business property — are reported accurately and in accordance with Connecticut law.
City officials indicated the audits will review certain business accounts and will be conducted over a multi-year period. TMA will work under the direction of the City Assessor, who retains full authority over valuation determinations and any resulting adjustments to the tax roll. City Manager Brian Daniels noted that the initiative marks the first time Meriden has undertaken a citywide review of business personal property accounts.
Under Connecticut statute, business owners are required to file annual personal property declarations. When declarations are incomplete, filed late, or not filed at all, assessors are responsible for estimating value and applying applicable penalties. Audit programs are one tool municipalities use to ensure compliance and maintain fairness across the commercial tax base.
The initiative coincides with Meriden’s revaluation cycle and its efforts to maintain assessment accuracy. By reviewing reported assets and identifying discrepancies when necessary, the City aims to ensure consistency and equity in the distribution of the tax burden.
TMA provides audit support services to municipalities nationwide and works collaboratively with local officials to review accounts, document findings, and support the assessment process in accordance with state and local requirements.
